I have a minor obsession with painted cakes, all things floral and water colors. Bringing these trends together was delicious and fun.
Steps to take before painting a cake:
Step 1: Fondant-covered cakes provide the smoothest background for painting. First, fill and frost your cake with the buttercream of your choice, then place in the refrigerator to chill for at least 20-30 minutes. Remove the cake from the refrigerator and cover with fondant.
Step 2: You may also apply paint to buttercream frosting. Be sure to chill the cakes thoroughly before painting so that the frosting is firm.
Step 3: Place a tiny amount of each gel food color to be used in a small palette and thin it with vodka — no need for top shelf, the economy brand works just fine. Alcohol is used as a thinner because it dries quickly.
How to apply paint on a cake:
Tip 1: Painting freehand is the least cumbersome if you’re comfortable with this method.
Tip 2: Using a stencil provides lots of design options as well as a defined space to work in.
Tip 3: Whether you freehand or stencil directly on the cake, you can apply paint with a paintbrush, sponge, airbrush or food coloring aerosol paint cans found in the baking section of grocery and craft stores.
Tip 4: If painting isn’t your thing, consider using an edible image. They are available in designs for all occasions and are simple to apply to your cakes. The images come on a plastic sheet and you simply peel them off and apply to your frosted cakes. Most cake supply shops will print most images you bring in as long as there is not copyright on them.
