How to Make DIY Galaxy Vases | Crafting the Party
Where are my space-loving mamas? Living in Houston near the NASA Space Center, space themes are popular year-round, for both boys and girls. We recently fell in love with an animated space invitation from Evite, featuring bold purples. Using this as inspiration, we created 3 versions of a galaxy-inspired centerpiece to share with you as part of Crafting the Party, Evite’s new IGTV series. We hope these simple DIY projects inspire your next celebration!

Let’s start with the quickest of the projects, using color shift paint. This paint type has grown popular recently in a variety of crafts, and I just love how it can instantly transform a piece.

Materials:

  •       Black spray paint
  •       Color shift spray paint

Instructions:

  1. To begin, give your clean glass vase a complete coat of black spray paint. Allow the first coat to try for 3-5 minutes.
  2. If you didn’t achieve full coverage on the glass vase, give it another quick coat.
  3. Once the black spray paint has completely dried, apply a coat of color shift spray paint. This type of paint can be found in the spray paint aisle of your local craft store, and is often available in a variety of color combinations. We chose this green to purple color shift to pair with the vivid purple space invitation from Evite.
  4. Once this coat has dried, you can fill the vase with your favorite flowers.

DIY Marbled Vases

I LOVE marbling techniques! I have used this technique on a number of party projects in the past, but this was my first time working with a clear glass vase. I experimented with marbling both the inside and outside of the glass, and am excited to share both outcomes with you.

Materials:

  • Enamel or acrylic paints in 3-4 complementary colors (enamel is used on the interior of a glass vase to waterproof, whereas acrylic paint works perfectly on the exterior of a vase)
  • Marbling medium (if you are marbling enamel paints)
  • Plastic or disposable cups
  • Wax paper (optional)

  1. Pour each color of enamel paint into its own plastic or disposable cup. Note: Enamel paint gives the interior a waterproof coating, so you can later add flowers and water. You can find enamel paints in the model section of your craft store, typically available in small glass jars.

  1. Once you have poured each color of paint into its own cup, add an equal portion of marbling solution to each glass. Mix using a plastic spoon.
  2. Now that your marbling solutions are ready, pour one at a time into the interior of your vase.
  3. Begin swirling the colors together, coating the entire surface of the vase and pouring out excess into your disposable try.
  4. Once you have achieved the full coverage and pattern desired, set the vase upside down to try. It generally takes 24-48 hours to fully dry.

  1. Follow the same steps above, but pour the solutions on the exterior of the glass, swirling the vase around until you have achieved the desired marbling. For the best results and to avoid dripping, keep moving the glass vase around until you see the shifting of paint come to a complete stop. Once the paint has settled, set the vase down on wax paper (for easy removal once the vase has completely dried).
