Planning a casual get-together with just a few friends? No need to go all out when deciding which type of wine to serve. Make it easy on yourself by selecting four kinds of wine — two whites and two reds (we chose Cavit Pinot Grigio, Cavit Moscato, Cavit Select Red Blend and Cavit Pinot Noir). If you want to make your wine tasting feel more official, purchase separate red and white wine glasses (certain stores sell special glasses for each). Typically, red wine glasses are taller and wider than white wine glasses because the wider base gives the wine more breathing room and allows the bigger and bolder aromas to emerge.
When it’s time to start the tasting, pass out our free printable scorecard to friends with a pen or pencil. Taste each wine one by one, then fill out the scorecard as you go. Never been to a tasting? Try these quick tips to get started. When you do a wine tasting, you want to start by swirling the wine around in your glass for a few seconds to let the wine “breathe.” Then, sniff the wine before you sip (a few short sniffs of the wine will help you identify different aromas). Guests who may be new to wine tasting can also refer to our wine tasting cheat sheet, which provides helpful definitions for wine tasting newbies. Pass one out to each guest or place it in a frame to display at one end of the wine tasting table.
No wine tasting is complete without food to pair with it. Setting up a simple charcuterie will instantly make your get-together feel more fancy. For our charcuterie, we chose to serve olives, two types of cheese, salami and prosciutto and rosemary crackers. For dessert, serve dark chocolate to pair with the red wine. You can also serve plain crackers for guests to use as palate cleansers between tastings.
