Build Your Own Backyard Photo Booth for Under $50

Summer is in full swing! Get the gang together to soak up the summer sunshine by planning a party at home. Need an activity that’s fun for everyone? Try building your own backyard photo booth. No need to spend thousands purchasing a professional one. Building your own photo booth is easy — and affordable. Plus, the photos make for a perfect party favor. All you have to do is cut four PVC pipes into the following sizes outlined in the video and steps below. Then, find a friend and put the pieces together.

Once your photo booth has been built, duct tape a piece of fabric to the front (we dip-dyed ours) then download our free summer printable photo props. Pineapple, anyone? After you download the props, print them on cardstock, cut them out, then glue them onto wooden dowels (just make sure the dowel is centered on the back of each prop). Set up a side table next to your photo booth to hold your props (we recommend putting your props in a jar). Pro tip: Add dried beans or sand to the bottom to help hold your props upright.

All that’s left now is to purchase the Evite Photo Booth app for your iPad and start snapping selfies. You can hold the iPad in your hand or mount it on a tripodImage may be NSFW.

for more stability (Pro tip: Placing it on a tripod keeps your hands free and makes it even easier for everyone to get involved). Then, save and share your party pics with family and friends via email, Facebook and Twitter or print them using AirPrint.

Summer Backyard Party Guide

Time:

Difficulty: Medium

Cost:

Materials:

  • PVC pipe cutter or pipe saw
  • 4 10-foot PVC pipes (Note: All PVC pipes are 3/4-inch in diameter)
  • 4 PVC ‘T’ joints
  • 2 PVC ‘L’ joints
  • 1 large cloth
  • 1 roll of duct tape

Directions:

Step 1: Using a PVC pipe cutter or pipe saw, cut all 4 PVC pipes so that you have the following: 2, 6-foot pieces, 2, 4-foot pieces, 4, 3.5-foot long pieces and 2, 3-foot long pieces.

Step 2: Build 2 base legs by connecting 1, 3-foot piece and 1, 4-foot piece with a ‘T’ joint. Lay both pieces on a flat surface (we built ours in the backyard on the grass), then point the 4-foot pieces toward you and the 3-foot pieces away from you. The pieces should be parallel to one another and spaced 6 feet apart.

Step 3: Take one of the 3.5-foot pieces and place it in the opening at the top of the ‘T’ joint so that it points up, toward the sky. Repeat on the other side with the second 3.5-foot piece.

Step 4: Add the remaining two ‘T’ joint to each of the 3.5-foot pieces.

Step 5: Connect the first 6-foot piece in between the two ‘T’ joints. The 6-foot piece should be perpendicular to the 2, 3.5-foot pieces.

Step 6: Connect the remaining 2, 3.5-foot pieces to the opening of either ‘T’ joint.

Step 7: Attach an ‘L’ joint to each 3.5-foot piece.

Step 8: Use the last 6-foot piece to connect the two ‘L’ joints on top.

Step 9: Using duct tape, attach your photobooth backdrop to the frame.

Step 10: Download the Evite Photo Booth app and start snapping selfies!
