I’ve found that there are three ways to make a statement with tablescapes. First, tablescaping doesn’t have to be showy and over the top and quite often less is more. It’s all about creating the right mood for the moment. It also helps to have a theme for cohesiveness. In addition, choosing colors that harmonize makes a big difference with your table tops.
One way to make sure they work well together is to use paint chip samples. Get them online or grab a bunch the next time you’re at your home improvement store. Paint chips take the guesswork out of what colors work together and gives you more design options.
Second is the area where the eye is immediately drawn — the centerpiece. If you feel a bit challenged with floral design, there are alternatives. A few flowers, silk or real, in a single grouping. Candles in varying heights and styles also work well. Try an edible centerpiece like a bowl of fruit, a cake or even a basket of pastries.
The final component could very well be the most important way to make a statement with your tablescape. Be true to your style. Unless you’re entertaining heads of state, allow yourself to feel relaxed and throw out what doesn’t work for you. I promise the manners mavens won’t show up at your door. If you want to mix your grandmother’s china with ridged dollar store goblets to bring in texture, go right ahead.
Own your style and make it the best representation of you. That being said, be confident enough to play around with different elements so you’re not stuck in a rut.
