I have been wanting to create a mermaid party for quite some time now and I was finally asked to do one for my friend’s 5-year-old daughter. There were so many ideas swimming (excuse the pun!) around in my head.
I had a lot of fun with DIYs for this party, starting with decorating the mermaid centerpiece with paint and glitter to creating the rocks I had the birthday girl sitting on.
After finishing the mermaid, I started on a wooden backdrop. I painted it with a blue watercolor wash and attached some fishing net and glued on sea-themed accessories. To create Mia’s name and make a “splash” (I do love a good pun!), I picked up papier mâché letters and spray painted them a metallic gold first, followed by a glitter gold. Gold is so easy to do and really glams things up quickly.
My next project was a mermaid treasure display box, which every little girl needs! These boxes are easy to find at your local craft store and I painted it and glued gorgeous sea glass and starfish onto it. Next comes the treasure! I found a gorgeous, shiny shell which I put inside with a string of pearls. I used blue tulle and added some shells, a starfish, kelp and a string of oversized pearls I found at a scrap store (find!!). It really looked like a little lagoon.
I kept the kids’ food table really simple. I used a twine-based runner with a blue, geometric wave patterned runner on top and added three centerpieces. I scattered driftwood pieces, shells and starfish. The centerpieces were blue glass vases filled with fake greenery and a string of pearls. Then, I added 3 lollipop sticks with cupcake toppers and mini starfish glued to each one.
I added some extra greenery and shells around the bottom of the cupcake stand and around the favors (cute little bags with white bubbles printed on them and stamped with a mermaid on rocks).
