DIY Screen-Printed Fabric Sign by Evite

Planning a girls’ night get-together or baby shower? Do it up with a DIY screen-printed fabric sign — a modern take on a traditional pennant banner. Use it as a welcome sign on your front door, a sign to hang on the guest of honor’s chair, or as a gift for a mommy-to-be to hang in the baby’s nursery. All materials can be purchased at a craft store or online.

Level: Intermediate

Cost: $15

Time: 1 hour (including 30 minutes of drying time)

Materials:

  • Canvas fabric
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Monofilament polyester screen fabric (or an old pair of pantyhose)
  • 10″ embroidery hoop
  • Stencils or printable templates
  • Adhesive vinyl sheets (or contact paper)
  • Cricut craft cutting machine or X-ACTO knife
  • Tweezers or toothpick
  • Screen-printing ink (we recommend Versatex or Speedball) or fabric paint
  • Small screen-printing squeegee
  • Wooden dowel
  • Twine

Directions:

Step 1: Cut an 11″x16″ piece of canvas fabric, hot-gluing each edge back to create a hem. Tip: Iron the hem for a cleaner edge.

Step 2: To make your screen, cut a 12″x12″ piece of screen fabric and place it between the inner and outer circle of your embroidery hoop (or cut a piece of pantyhose and stretch it to fit the hoop). Tighten the hoop to secure the fabric in place.

Step 3: Create an image using stencils or by drawing freehand. We used these free printable templates and printed them on adhesive vinyl sheets, then cut them out using a Cricut craft cutting machine. You can also use an X-ACTO knife to cut your design out of contact paper.

Step 4: Peel the paper backing off your design and place the sticky side on your screen. Use a pair of tweezers or a toothpick to ensure the small details of your design are all pressed flat against your screen.

Step 5: Place your screen on top of your fabric sign, ensuring it’s centered. Then pour a line of paint above your design. Using a squeegee, apply even pressure to gently scrape the paint over your design.

Step 6: Carefully pull the entire screen off the fabric sign, then immediately wash screen with soap and water. Allow your sign to dry for at least 30 minutes.

Step 7: Hot-glue the top of your fabric around a wooden dowel, then tie twine to either end of a wooden dowel to hang your sign.
