For my mom’s surprise birthday dinner, I threw a Spanish-style beach party, drawing inspiration from my mom’s hometown, a Spanish beach town, and some photos of her in an orange bikini. We served homemade, authentic Spanish cuisine, and I made the white tablecloth with sheer fabric ruffles — symbolic of the ocean’s waves and the ruffles of a flamenco dress. To go with the orange bikini inspiration, I used orange and teal colors in the decor, from the cookies to the tissue paper carnations on the wooden spoons. And, for dessert, we served a Spanish almond cake, a popular traditional Spanish recipe.
