How to Celebrate Wellness Month

August is National Wellness Month. Self-care, stress management and healthy routines are all fantastic ways to boost your well-being. They can also be a lot of fun, especially if you get others involved in the experience.

Not quite sure how to turn self-care into a group thing? We have some ideas! So sit back, relax and see what speaks to you (and also think about who you want to invite).

Bring the Spa to You

A little pampering goes a long way toward improving mind and body wellness, and it doesn’t have to involve spending a lot of money or time planning. Just do a little shopping for supplies, invite a small group of friends and start practicing for your #wellfie! Need some in-spahhh-ration? Here are our top tips:

  • Add ambiance with candles, relaxing music and an outdoor setting complete with potted palms. Also, encourage your guests to bring robes to wear for maximum comfort.
  • Opt for sheet masks over clay or cream. They’re inexpensive, available in multi-packs so everyone can choose their fave and oh-so-easy to use.
  • Set up a mini mani station. Provide nail polish remover and cotton balls for old polish removal, individual bowls with warm water and shower oil for nail soaking, nail files and of course, nail polish!
  • Pre-make some delicious appetizers and set up a mimosa bar for guests to help themselves to. The conversation won’t be the only thing flowing!
  • Send your guests home with goodies to keep them glowing! Bath bombs, hand lotion, candles, tea packets and eye masks all fit perfectly into goody bags, and they’ll definitely be appreciated and used. Bonus points if you embellish the bag with a sprig of dried lavender.

Embrace the Great Outdoors

The feel of grass under bare feet. The sound of leaves dancing in the breeze. The sight of blue skies. Mentally and physically, spending time out in nature is a great way to boost your mood. Gather a few friends and meet at your local park, forest or lake and embrace nature together. You can also use this moment as an opportunity to raise funds for the National Forest Foundation on your invitation. So take your allergy meds and ponder the following suggestions:

  • Try forest bathing. Put your phone on DND and fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. Take in all of the sights, sounds, textures and scents of the forest and focus on the moment. Share what you’re sensing with each other if you feel comfortable doing so.
  • Take a hike on a trail that everyone in your group can manage. Wear proper clothing and footwear, and don’t forget the water and sunscreen!
  • Enjoy yoga in the park. Grab your mat, look up some new poses and perform a true sun salutation.
  • Watch the sunset or go stargazing to venture beyond blue skies. If stargazing, bring along some star charts and see how many constellations and planets you can spot.

Savor & Share Healthy Recipes

There’s no shortage of mouthwatering recipes out there, but finding ones that are both delicious and good for you can be a real journey. Set up a healthy recipe swap with some of your friends! Not only will you enjoy some tasty food with excellent company, but you can also add something new to your own recipe book. Here’s how to make it happen:

  • Send out an invitation that lets your guests know to bring a healthy dish of their choice along with copies of the recipe for other guests to take home. “Healthy dishes” can include a variety of things, such as foods that are organic, fresh (not processed), high in nutrients or low in sugar and saturated fat.
  • Set up a table or two outside with plates and cutlery at one end and cups, napkins and drinks at the other to keep the things organized. Consider purchasing chafing dishes and fuel to keep hot dishes warm. Make sure you have enough seating for everyone.
  • When the guests arrive, spread their dishes out across the tables and keep them covered until most or all of the guests are there. Place the recipes behind the dishes.
  • Once the group is complete, announce that it’s time for everyone to dig in and discover their new favorite recipes!

Want to extend the good vibes out to even more people? Consider adding a donation button! Your guests can donate to a non-profit or crowdfunding project of your choice while RSVPing to your invitation through Evite Donations, powered by Pledgeling. Active Minds, CicLAvia and the aforementioned National Forest Foundation are a few organizations to consider supporting during National Wellness Month.
