DIY Paper Lantern Piñata

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with a bright DIY piñata! Although commonly associated with Mexican traditions, the origin of the piñata can be traced to China as far back as the 13th century. Piñatas in the shape of cows, oxen, buffaloes and other animals were adorned with colored fabrics, filled with various seeds in hopes of a fruitful harvest and used to celebrate the New Year.

Create your own piñata (reusable for years to come, thanks to the pull tab!) from the video and steps below.

Time: 1 1/2 to 2 hours

Level of difficulty: Medium

Materials:

  • 10″ paper lantern
  • Tissue paper
  • White cardstock
  • Gold glitter cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
  • String
  • Hole punch
  • Fringe scissors (optional)
  • Piñata goodies (we used traditional envelopes, candy and confetti)

Step 1: Cut tissue strips 1 1/2″ x 9″ and fringe using fringe scissors or regular scissors. Only cut 3/4 of the way up your tissue strips, leaving the top portion uncut.

Step 2: Attach fringe to piñata using double-sided tape, starting from the bottom. Make sure the fringe is pointing toward the bottom of your piñata.

Step 3: Create pull-string base by cutting a 4″ x 6″ piece of tissue paper and taping a 1″ x 4″ piece of cardstock onto the tissue paper with double-sided tape.  Fold the tissue and cardstock piece in half and hole-punch.

Step 4: Cut out a cardstock circle, hole-punch the top, thread with twine and tie a knot to attach string to pull-string base.

Step 5: Insert pull-string base into piñata.
