September is right around the corner, so why not host a back-to-school party to celebrate? Kids will love these handmade dancing crayon puppets. They’re perfect for putting on a musical, puppet show, or dance battle! Make a bunch of multi-colored crayons ahead of time for kids to play with at the party, or you can even set up a crafting station for guests to create their own custom puppets!

1. Cut a 9-inch section off the end of your pool noodle for the crayon’s body. For the pointed tip, cut another piece of pool noodle about 2-inches long. Cut a wedge out of the short piece and use the craft knife to carefully hollow out the inside foam—this will help the foam roll nicely into a cone shape. Try rolling this short piece of foam into a cone, trimming if needed until you’re happy with the shape. Use a piece of clear tape to secure. Then, use your hot glue gun on low heat setting to attach the cone onto one end of the long pool noodle.

2. To make the handle, twist two pipe cleaners around the ends of a short dowel. Once they’re secure, pierce the pipe cleaners into the back of the crayon (where the tape is visible).

3. For the crayon wrapper, cut a piece of colored paper in a similar shade to your pool noodle, shorter than your crayon (about 7 or 8 inches). Tape one end next to the pipe cleaners at the back, wrap the paper around, and trim so it ends right next to the other side of the pipe cleaners. Use clear tape to secure it in place.

4. Cut two 4-inch pieces of rope for the arms and two 3-inch pieces for the legs. Use the pointed end of a wooden skewer to poke two arm holes into the body of the crayon. Insert the ends of the rope arms into these holes, again using the pointed end of a wooden skewer to push the rope into the pool noodle so that it’s secure. Do this for both sides and then do the same on the bottom for the legs.
5. To make the hands and feet, paint four small styrofoam balls and let dry. Use the pointed end of a skewer to poke a hole into each styrofoam ball and then insert the ends of the arms and legs into each so that they’re secure.
Tip: We didn’t use glue here, but if your rope isn’t stayed secure in the pool noodle or foam, add a small dab of glue before inserting the rope.

6. Hot glue two googly eyes onto the front of your crayon, and use a black marker to draw a little smile on too.

7. Hot glue the dull ends of two wooden skewers onto opposite ends of a jumbo popsicle stick, forming a U-shape, and let dry. After dry, poke the two pointed ends of your U-shape into each of the puppet’s styrofoam ball hands. You’ll hold this in one hand to control both of the crayon’s arms, while you use your other hand to move the crayon’s body.
And don’t forget to create an invitation to gather classmates for your back-to-school party! We picked out this adorable invitation design to go with our crayon theme.
